Insuring a Luxury Watch

So, you’ve been working extremely hard the past year and you decide the time has come, the time to invest in a luxury watch. For many of us, when we decide to invest in a luxury watch it becomes our most valuable possession in terms of monetary value. The effort put in to reward yourself with an elegant expensive time piece can be a rewarding experience that makes it all worth it. However, when purchasing such an expensive item, it’s important to not forget to ensure you’re covered through having an insurance policy to protect your new luxury watch. Read our thoughts on insuring luxury watches so you’re good to go from the moment you pick it up.

Why do you need insurance for a luxury watch?

With luxury watches costing anywhere above £2,000, it’s important they’re insured to protect the monetary value. Luxury watches can sometimes be one of the most expensive items of jewellery that you own, so it’s important that item is protected should something happen to it. Luxury watches can be easily lost, damaged and stolen. So, protecting your investment with insurance ensures you’re covered should anything unpredictable happen to the item. It means you can buy your choice of luxury watch with confidence knowing you’ve got cover.

Do luxury watches need bespoke insurance cover?

When you find yourself purchasing such an expensive item, it’s important to ensure that it’s covered by which offers a wide range of covers. “All- Risks” is generally accepted as offering the widest form of cover available and this form of insurance will cover; theft, accidental loss and accidental damage.

You can of course, try to cover your luxury watch under your home insurance policy, and this is a common approach. If you are going to approach your home insurers to cover your watch, you will need to make sure that the items is covered both at, and away from you home, most thefts and losses of watches, in our experience, occur away from where you live.

However, what this does do is put your current home insurance no claims bonus at risk in the event you need to make a claim. Taking our bespoke insurance for your luxury watch means you can have a completely separate policy dedicated to the common issues that usually happen with watches.

The day you get your luxury watch

You’ve had your eye on the watch you’ve wanted all year and the time has finally come to purchase it. You’ve enquired and they have it available and the price has been agreed. You’re excited about the purchase you’re about to make.

When purchasing a luxury watch it’s important to have insurance from the moment you pick the watch up from the retailer. Once they’ve handed the watch over to you, it’s now your possession so, it’s important you insure your most valuable item right away rather than waiting to get home.

Other top tips to consider when it comes to luxury watch insurance

Understand your watch policy

Before taking out insurance on your luxury watch, it’s important you fully understand the requirements of your policy as every provider has different requirements. Before your buy a policy, you should be able to view the policy wording and a document called an “Insurance product information document” or “IPID” This will allow you to study the cover and any significant exclusions.

This ensures you can be confident that should anything happen to your timepiece, you will have adequate insurance in place to obtain a replacement item. Not fully understanding your watch policy is one of the most common mistakes made. and as insurers are obliged to give you a cooling off period of at least 14 days, you can easily return the policy for a refund should you not be satisfied with any aspect of the insurance cover.

Watch Valuations

When it comes to luxury watches there are so many brands to choose from Rolex, Breitling Omega, Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer and more. These brands of watches have collections amongst them which hold value extremely well. In fact, your luxury watch could be so popular and sought after they increase in price, without you even realising. Due to this, we recommend completing valuations for your luxury watch on a regular basis. This isn’t an opportunity for you to show off how good your watch investment is but an opportunity to ensure your watch value is updated on your insurance policy, so you’re always protected and able to obtain a replacement if the watch is lost or stolen. The last thing you want to do is lose out on getting an adequate replacement because you haven’t valued your item in a while.

Wear it with confidence

Knowing your luxury watch is protected through specialist watch insurance means you can wear your timepiece with complete confidence. There’s no need to leave it at home or hide it away. When taking out watch insurance you’re usually protected against loss, theft, damage as well as on occasions travel for a certain amount of days.

The Watch Strap

When purchasing a luxury watch, especially second hand, it’s important to note and review the condition of strap.
